Out of all of the complaints I've seen fired at this album the one that perplexes me the most is that of the production, which, to me, not only sounds full and colossal but also manages to stay true to the aural aesthetic of the band's previous work. If anything, that would be the one true victory this time 'round for Bolzer. That, of course, is not to say that I deem 'Hero' a failure on any level. Hardly. It is just that there are those elements that I can clearly see others being thrown off track over, such as the various vocal nuances that have been brought out to the forefront instead of being relegated to mere "guest appearance" status as they have previously been.
Again, that shit doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's not as if the band "all of a sudden" decided to employ and incorporate clean vocals into their arsenal. They've been doing that shit since day one. It's just that this time around they decided to add a little more. Injecting them into areas where they saw fit. Fine by me. I happen to like them. There is something mighty, almost Grecian, about them to me which, of course, only adds to flavor of the lyrical content as well as the windy atmosphere and ensuing onslaught of the music itself.
There are slight gripes to be had, for sure, such as the first half of the album having a "same-y" sort of feel to it, not to mention that the riffs themselves aren't particularly the most inventive ol' KzR's conjured fourth. However, things begin to get mighty interesting around the intermission and beyond and that's really where the album's best songs come out to do battle. The riffing on a few of these tracks is downright bizarre and not far removed from that which you would hear on an Immolation album, which could never be a bad thing!
The only other flaw that can be construed is the lack of KzR's deeper growl. Starting with his work with New Zealand's Witchrist, he began to employ a slightly higher, raspier cackle, which, in and of itself sounds great, yet I am also as fan of the behemoth howl of old found on Bolzer's previous work so it would have been a treat to have heard a little more of them on this album. Nothing to fret over, though, as the vocal manifestations here are quite competent on their own and certainly get the job done.
Aside from these few and truly minor criticisms, I remain in awe of this band and, again, find myself rather puzzled as to the amount of angst and flak they have received from their supposed "fans" for this album. I hear no real deviation from earlier outings and it certainly stands out amidst the sea of technical chug-fests that is in no danger of drying up, The only thing I can come up with is that the metal scene has indeed been flooded with a newer, whinier type of "fan" that persists upon pissing and moaning over any perceived slight against their precious and oh so delicate sensibilities. Ironically, I've noticed that fanatically ousting someone as being a "hipster" is a tactic employed by... hipsters!
Anyway, fuck what the underground kvlt hipsters tell ya, Hero is a great album indeed filled with more good ideas than not and I definitely look forward to what comes next from the band.

Bolzer - Soma (2014)
And so the mighty duo known as Bolzer return to tease the masses with yet another -ep-. This shit can get highly annoying, especially when committed by a band as great as Bolzer yet on the other hand, I'll take what I can get!
The beginning riff on opener 'Steppes' sounds a bit "regressed", meaning I wouldn't be surprised if it was an unused piece of material that the band decided to stick into the equation in order to add length to the existing body of work. It's not terrible but it's also not terribly interesting. Unfortunately, Bolzer has set the bar so incredibly high that everything they do is subject to an almost unfair amount of scrutiny. Sorry fellas but it's all in the reflexes, not to mention it's the nature of the beast.
Once you get past the introductory riff exchange things start poppin' in the usual Bolzer fashion and don't be surprised if you find yourself dazed, drooling and daydreaming in the midst of the band's epic knack for painting visual mindscapes. Sure, Aura may still be the reigning champ of Bolzer's string of shortrunners but by no means is this some sort of drop in quality. If anything the band are heading "further out there" and I'm almost afraid that next time 'round my mind might not make it back to the ship before its return trip.

The Way's Top Ten of 2013 (in no particular order)
Bolzer - Aura
Haven't been this stoked about a death metal band in quite some time, really. I know the big cool way to describe evil sounding death metal these days is to call it "blackened" death (total fucking barf), but for my money this is straight up evil death metal. Everything from the morose and majestic tremolo picking throughout down to the Bolt Thrower-ish chug of 'Wolfshook', this album is a mind-blasting reminder of what could be.
Blut aus Nord - What Once Was... Liber III
I can only assume that this -ep- is one big giant FUCK YOU to the fags that threw a temper tantrum and pissed their diapers over the band's 777 trilogy because this motherfucker is pure evil! This is quite possibly the band's most vicious sounding material since The Work Which Transforms God. Great stuff and a reminder that this band has lost nothing.
Saturnalia Temple - Impossibilium
Nifty little two song -ep- of occult doom to hold you over until the next Electric Wizard comes barreling 'round the bend. That or album #2 from Saturnalia Temple themselves! At the rate we're going, don't hold your breath for either.
Psicomagia - Psicomagia
Stupidely delicious psych-prog from Astra's Brian Ellis. For me, this is far superior to his main band.
Vista Chino - Peace
Josh who?
Holy Mount - Alpic
Picking up where 'We Fell From the Sky' left off, there isn't much "progression" from that album as 'Alpic' is more of a honing of skills. Fine by me. If you got a good thing goin' on, why fuck with the ingredients?
Situs Magus - La Grand Oeuvre
Yet ANOTHER insanely awesome black metal band from France! What more needs to be said?
A.M.S.G. - Anti-Cosmic Tyranny
Weirdo "old style" black metal with jazz sections (?!) who are apparently "really into" Satanism. I couldn't give a fuck less. As long as the music jams... and it does!
Melt-Banana - Fetch
Who knew experimental grindcore with a healthy dollap of pop sensibilities would sound so fucking good? Well, I did! But that's only because Melt-Banana have been kicking my ass for well over a decade. Now if only C.S.S.O. would get off of their asses and make good on the promise of 'Diversion of Former Customary Trite Composition'!
SubRosa - More Constant Than the Gods
I'll be honest with ya... this can be downright boring at times, but... when this shit gets good, prepare for your head to freeze, crack and explode!
